Critics have praised the actress for her portrayal of the late Princess Diana in ‘Spencer’.
American actress Kristen Stewart premiered drama Spencer at the London Film Festival on Thursday, October 7, saying she was excited to bring her portrayal of the late Princess Diana to British audiences.
It would be wrong to describe this jittery and jazzy narrative about Princess Diana (Kristen Stewart) as dark. It would be truer to say that the film is colorful. The vivid scene in which our heroine lacerates herself with a wire-cutter is one you’ll never forget.
The actress, during a conversation with Entertainment Weekly, talked about her highly-anticipated character. “I knew even before I read the script. I was like, ‘You’re not going to say no to this, because who would you be in that case?’ I absolutely would have felt like such a coward. Especially given that I’m such an outsider,” Stewart revealed.
The 31-year-old has won rave reviews for her performance in the movie. Set over three days, it follows Diana as she reluctantly heads to Sandringham House for a Christmas gathering with the British royals as her marriage to Prince Charles crumbles.
Stewart said she felt the Princess was at her most ‘untouchable’ when she was with her sons, William and Harry. “She’s like this feral animal you wouldn’t dare accost” she said, of the woman she plays in Pablo Larrain’s film, which imagines three days the Princess spent at Sandringham at Christmas, in the run-up to her separation and eventual divorce from Prince Charles. Stewart is well aware of the mixed reaction. “I definitely knew that the chances of ‘mucking this up’, as a Brit might say, were far greater than doing a good job,” she said. “But I thought it was worth it. I’ve been working as an actor for a long time [since the age of nine], and it’s really rare to find things that make you feel this way.” Getting inside that head, she added, had imbued her with a ‘spooky’ kind of power.
A female-centric study of power and corruption, Spencer proves every bit as rousing and wrenching, that will leave the viewers sobbing on the way home, sources had said.
