Manila City Mayor Isko Moreno recently signed the Executive Order No.33 ordering the closure of Manila Cemetery, Manila South Cemetery, Manila Muslim Cemetery and other public and private memorial parks in the city from October 23 to November 3.
The official memorandum is said to regulate and prevent imminent spread of COVID-19 especially that the country is still at moderate risk with the said contagion.
“In order to sustain the city’s efforts in containing the spread of COVID-19 and to prevent an imminent COVID-19 super spreader event, there is a compelling need to avoid the influx of people in memorial parks, cemeteries, and columbaries immediately before, during, and immediately after All Saints’ Day and All Souls’ Day Celebration,” the order reads.
The proclamation also mandates Local Government Units (LGU) and government agencies such as the Directors of the Manila Cemeteries, with the assistance of the Manila Police District, the Manila Health Department, the Manila Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office, and the Department of Public Services to ensure compliance and implementation of the order.
Moreno added that failure to comply with the EO 33 will cause to the revocation of the establishment’s local permits.
Moreover, the order assured that “internment and cremation services for non-COVID-19 cases shall be allowed, subject to the strict observance of minimum public health standards and social distancing.”
This will be the second time where visitation to cemeteries for the UNDAS season is being restricted.
